- Words you look up. Dictionary lookups on the website, and — for the extension — hover/selection lookups not already cached locally, are sent to our server to fetch a definition.
- Usage counts. How many dictionary lookups, grammar analyses, and AI-assisted translations you make, and (for the extension) how many pages/selections you look up and how many sessions you start — recorded as running totals, not a detailed history of what you looked up or which pages you visited.
- Flashcard study data, if you use the SRS flashcard feature — which words you've added, your review history, and scheduling state, so the spaced-repetition algorithm can work.
- Account email, only if you choose to register. By default both the website and the extension use an anonymous session; registering (via Google sign-in or an emailed sign-in link) associates that session with the email address you provide.
- Search terms with no dictionary coverage, so we know which words to add next.
- Extension version number (extension only), sent alongside usage counts so we can track which versions are in use.
We do not collect your general browsing history or the pages you visit, beyond the specific word or selection you look up through the extension. We do not sell or share your data with third parties for advertising or marketing.
This data lets us serve definitions, build up a dictionary of previously-looked-up words, schedule flashcard reviews, and understand feature usage so we can improve both the site and the extension. It is not used to build an advertising profile.
Data is stored using Supabase, which also provides authentication (including Google sign-in). Requests are served through Netlify functions on the WenYanWenGongju backend, and dictionary lookups may be sent to Anthropic's or Google's AI APIs to generate a translation or definition when nothing else covers a word. Your account, if registered, is shared between the website and the ZhongWenYanWen extension, since both use the same underlying account.
